1st Meeting:

  1. Project Plan; Orientation to the calendar; Individual Research Topics

  2. Introduction to Hong Lou Meng

  3. Reading Assignment: Ch 1-2 and questions

  4. Homework:  1) Begin your blog entries; 2) write a self-introduction for the blog (with a picture), reflect on questions and any other issues you may want to address before meeting 2, about 500 words; 3) Ch 3-5 and question

2nd Meeting:

  1. Family Tree/Major Characters

  2. Basic Features of the Novel

  3. Ways of looking at the Novel

  4. Chinese language

  5. Questions on Chapters 3 - 5.

  6. Work Plans for remainder of term and Spring Break - Read Chapters 6 - 26

  7. Homework:  Choose three “episodes” (whether single or multiple chapters or parts of chapters) from Chapters 1 - 26 which relate to your chosen research topic and write extended (~500 word) blog posts on each and how they relate.

3rd Meeting:

6th Meeting:

  1. Introductions - Each student will briefly introduce her or himself with a few comments on where they are in their reading of the novel and what they are researching.

  2. Questions for Lu Laoshi from each student, some of which will be common to the group. We foresee this as a relatively free form discussion between you and the students. 

  3. Advice from you - we'll ask you to offer any advice on reading and researching further, given what you've seen and heard from us, including any recommendations you have for how we spend our time in China.
